چکیده

Correspondence to: Professor M G Hanna, MRC Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases, Institute of Neurology and National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London WC1N 3BG, UK; [email protected] Muscle diseases impair mobility and frequently have cardiorespiratory complications. Their age of onset is extremely wide; patients may die young, or there may be lifelong motor disability with cardiorespiratory complications, or late onset muscle weakness. About 50 000 people in the UK population of 60.5 million have one of the diverse group of genetic and acquired conditions which make up the primary muscle diseases; many more have muscle symptoms due to drugs or systemic diseases such as cancer. The important acquired muscle diseases include the inflammatory myopathies which are treatable and so the diagnosis must not be missed (or overdiagnosed and some other disorder treated inappropriately), as well as the drug-induced myopathies. Neurologists are also often asked to assess patients with secondary muscle dysfunction due to aging, immobility, critical illness and cancer.

The bare essentials: hyperkinetic movement disorders: shakes, jumps and jolts.

2010;10:114–123. doi:10.1136/ jnnp.2010.206078 114 INTRODUCTION Movement disorders involve either too much or too little movement. One of the most common and important is Parkinson’s disease where there is a mixture of too little (bradykinesia) and too much movement (tremor and drug induced dyskinesia); this is the subject for a future Bare Essentials article and will not be considered here. Brief description of bare essentials of surface transfer and results from simulations with the HAPEX-MOBILHY data

The Bare Essentials of Surface Transfer (BEST) land surface scheme is briefly described and the key physical parameterisations discussed. Results are then presented to illustrate how the model performs, with forcing data for HAPEX-MOBILHY, compared to a series of other schemes in the simulation of evaporation and sensible heat. The implications of the models performance, and some indications of...

Dissection of the Factors Affecting Formation of a CH∙∙∙O H-Bond. A Case Study

Quantum calculations are used to examine how various constituent components of a large molecule contribute to the formation of an internal CH···O H-bond. Such a bond is present in the interaction between two amide units, connected together by a series of functional groups. Each group is removed one at a time, so as to monitor the effect of each upon the H-bond, and thereby learn the bare essent...

Carpal tunnel synd...
